Peter Andreas Thiel (born October 11, 1967, Frankfurt am Main) is a German-American technology investor and co-founder of PayPal and Palantir Technologies, and is the founding partner of Founders Fund 1. Forbes estimates his net worth at $27.5 billion, and he holds citizenship in the United States, Germany, and New Zealand 1. Thiel co-founded PayPal in 1998 (sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002), made a $500,000 seed investment in Facebook in 2004 for an initial 10.2% stake, and co-founded Palantir in 2003 with early funding from the CIA venture arm In-Q-Tel 1. According to a November 2017 exchange, Thiel wrote "Maybe lunch around noon?" and Epstein replied "look forward to it. see you then" 224. Groff's August 17, 2017 scheduling reply flagged the following day's Thiel lunch as VIP 89, and Thiel's executive assistant confirmed the 1pm slot to Epstein the same evening 232. According to a guest-list email from Epstein, a September 13, 2014 dinner at 9 East 71st Street included Thiel, Kathryn Ruemmler, and Soon-Yi Previn 2425. Records show an April 8, 2016 lunch at Thiel Capital's San Francisco office, with Groff coordinating parking and dietary details 76. Thiel's executive assistants Talia (2014) and Elly Untermeyer (2017) handled logistics with Epstein's staff 623.
Several negative findings bear on the scope of the relationship. Review of the records from Deutsche Bank, along with USVI corporate registries, UCC filings, FAA aircraft registrations, and FARA foreign-agent registrations, returned no results for Thiel or identified Thiel entities 14. According to separate dossier entries, Leon Black's payments under consulting agreements and Les Wexner's property and power-of-attorney transfers to Epstein are documented, and no equivalent transactions appear in the Thiel record 14. Introductions and Meeting Patterns
Cross-reference of email and schedule materials indicates Epstein arranged introductions for Thiel to figures outside Thiel's existing technology and venture network 14. In September 2014, Epstein arranged for Thiel to meet William "Bill" Burns, then Deputy Secretary of State, whom Epstein described as "the diplomats diplomat" who had "conducted the secret iran negotiations kept them secret for a year" 2627. According to the same week's schedule, Thiel appeared with Burns at 12pm, Boris Nikolic at 2pm, Jabor Al Thani at 3pm, and Terje Roed-Larsen at 8pm, with Leon Black and Kathryn Ruemmler also named 162.
An October 2015 email from Epstein records that he "spoke to chomsky and told him about you if monday afternoon works it would be just the three of us" 2829, proposing a meeting between Thiel and Noam Chomsky. In June 2015, according to a message from Epstein, he introduced Thiel to Sergey Belyakov, "my very good friend that's organizing innovation conference in Moscow" 3031. Thiel asked for context and later noted "they wanted me to come to Moscow not sure if I can do that" 3231. According to a July 2016 Republican National Convention email, Epstein forwarded an introduction to Tom Barrack, describing Barrack as a convention speaker who runs Colony Capital and serves as a Trump fundraiser 3334.
Epstein also used Thiel's presence to attract others. According to an October 2016 message, Epstein wrote to Jabor Al Thani's nephew, "Peter thiel is with me on fri founder of facebook paypal and palentir" 3536. That same month, according to Shuliak's scheduling email, Thiel and Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin had a joint lunch at 9 East 71st Street organized by Karyna Shuliak, with Ken Starr also invited 3738. Epstein had written to Thiel in September 2016, "sorry you are not here, vitally churkin debriefing on syria, wild" 38. According to a January 2017 email, Epstein proposed "geopolitics on the 10th new york. ehud churkin lunch?", pairing Thiel with the Russian UN Ambassador and Ehud Barak weeks before Churkin's death in February 2017 3839.
Silicon Valley Gatherings
According to a guest-list email sent to Epstein, an August 2, 2015 dinner at Baume Restaurant in Palo Alto included Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan, Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman, Joi Ito, MIT neuroscientist Ed Boyden, Desiree Dudley, Michelle Yee, and Navaid Farooq 4041. Two days later, analysis of the email thread indicates Epstein asked Thiel to bring "zuck and wife" to Zorro Ranch 1842. Correspondence places Thiel and Reid Hoffman together in Epstein's scheduling. According to an April 2016 email, Epstein wrote to Hoffman, "im waiting on thiel re lunch schedule" 4344, and Hoffman referenced a separate "potus" conversation in the thread 44. Richard Kahn forwarded at least six Thiel-related news articles to Epstein between 2017 and 2018 45. Gawker Litigation Timeline
Records show a temporal overlap between Thiel's funding of litigation against Gawker Media and Epstein's concern over the outlet's reporting 6061. According to a January 2015 email, Gawker reporter John Cook contacted Epstein's associates seeking comment on flight logs he planned to publish, writing "Just got a voicemail from John Cook from Gawker wanting to ask me questions. Said he is going to publish some of your flight logs" 6260. Days later, Epstein emailed Ghislaine Maxwell that Gawker had printed "the entire address book, albeit redacted" 6361. According to the same thread, Maxwell replied that mutual contacts were "apoplectic" 6361.
During the same period, according to Thiel's May 2016 statement to the New York Times, his intermediary Aron D'Souza funded multiple lawsuits against Gawker. According to Thiel's own public statements, he spent over $10 million on the litigation, including the Hulk Hogan sex-tape case that produced a $140 million jury verdict in March 2016 64. When that verdict was announced, Kathryn Ruemmler, then Epstein's attorney and a former Obama White House Counsel, emailed Epstein "This is amazing and kind of awesome" about the verdict 6564.
Available records do not show Epstein funding or directing the Gawker litigation. Review of the documents indicates independent motives converging on the same outcome: Thiel's 2007 outing by the site and Epstein's concern over publication of his address book and flight logs 6061. According to the Kahn email thread, Richard Kahn later forwarded Reuters coverage of Thiel's bid to acquire Gawker's assets in bankruptcy to Epstein 4945.
